| We will go to incredible ends to add breweries to our list of visits and in search of new “craft breweries” for our list. We recently embarked on a thirteen day trip to Munich, Germany with fellow beer enthusiasts Peter Hauser and Hogan Eng. Each day was an adventure via bus, tram (trolley) or train (both above and below ground) to different places most within an hour or two from Munich. We visited approximately 50 beer gardens. Very surprisingly the beer selection in Munich is limited. The big 6 in the Munich area control most of the market and with very few exceptions each beer garden has 2 beers, a Helles and a Dunkle. The only “true” brewery we visited was Ayinger, which was a fair distance from Munich by train. | ||

A Helles, Hefeweizen and Dunkel were tested by all and voted worthy of our consideration. Forschungsbrauerei (literally translated as “experimental brewery”) first opened in 1936 by Gottfried Jakob, the Weihenstephan-trained grandfather of the current brewer who was also trained at the ancient brewery/monastery/college. The modern day facility maintains a small local flavor with excellent beer and food available. More ... | ||
